When they got back to the barony that night, Charlotte couldn’t wait any longer. She wanted to find out what her father thought of Hendrick Worthington. As soon as they had sat down in the sitting room, Charlotte looked at her father.

“So, what do you think of Lord Worthington, Papa?”

“He seems nice enough.”

The young woman furrowed her brows. Her father seemed distracted. A brief answer like that was never a good sign.

“Oh, Charlotte. He is charming and a very handsome young man,” her mother raved with a dreamy look on her face. “You two make a beautiful couple.”

Ernest gave his wife a disapproving glance and stood up.

“I am going to bed. It’s been a long two days.”

“Will you at least tell me if you approve of him?” Charlotte pressed, irritation spreading across her face.

“Time will tell.” The duke nodded to everyone and disappeared. Charlotte dropped back into her seat. She was close to tears now. Her mother pulled her into her arms.

“Darling, give him time. He will love Lord Worthington just as much as the rest of us. Your father has never been good with change, and you are his baby. He comes across as harsh and unloving, but he cares more about you than you might think.”
